Borders MSP Rachael Hamilton has once again praised local resilience groups in the Borders for their part in the response to Storm Arwen last year.
Ms Hamilton took the opportunity to ask the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs if the Scottish Government would support these groups financially during a Rural Questions session last week.
In doing so, she highlighted the good will of volunteers who contribute to local resilience groups and underlined the need to ensure they can access Government funding when they need to.
Rachael Hamilton MSP said:
“Extreme weather events like those we saw last winter could become more common as the effects of climate change become more pronounced. There is a clear need to continue our work in tackling the root cause of this.
“However, so long as these events occur, we rely on the hard work of local resilience groups, alongside emergency services, to help us through them.
“That is why I thought it was important that I highlighted the need to ensure these groups are properly supported by the Scottish Government
“As our rural population ages, succession planning needs to be considered and the resources for this should be made available by the Scottish Government."
