Rachael Hamilton has branded the SNP Government’s lack of action on free adult dyslexia testing as ‘disgraceful’.
Ms Hamilton has been spearheading a campaign in the Scottish Parliament to remove charges for adults to be tested for dyslexia.
However, following months of parliamentary questions and ministerial letters, the SNP Government remains unwilling to commit to scrapping assessment charges.
Figures suggest that dyslexia could be much higher in rural communities than it is in the general population.
The Borders MSP believes if there was a nationwide free adult dyslexia programme, more people could access the right support to help them in their day-to-day lives.
Rachael Hamilton MSP said:
“Young people and adults who remain undiagnosed need access to free testing and support. Without it, their life chances are being hindered.
“Only children and young people are currently eligible for free testing .
“I want to ensure that neither age nor finances can act as a barrier for people to access testing for dyslexia.
“Over the past 2 years, I have repeatedly stood up and argued this point in Holyrood, but it has fallen on deaf ears.
“The SNP Government still don’t offer free tests to adults.
“I will continue to call on the SNP Government to back my campaign to provide free dyslexia tests for all adults who need it, and commit to undertaking an assessment into undiagnosed dyslexia in colleges, universities and the wider workplace”.
